Shirley Temple remains the most famous child star of all time, but even this designation fails to reflect the magnitude of her popularity during the era in which she worked. In many ways, Judy Garland’s rise to fame seems almost predestined. Not only was she a national sensation at a young age, but her parents and sisters were all vaudeville entertainers. On top of that, Garland’s parents owned and operated a movie theater, making it all the easier to draw the conclusion that singing and acting were simply professions which she was born into by virtue of her pedigree. Judy’s early childhood quickly demonstrated that she had a gifted voice that developed well beyond its years and seemingly did not require any formal training in order to achieve success; her first performance before a public audience came when she was still a toddler, and she would continue to act up until her death, never pausing for more than a few months at a time. That Garland was able to secure starring roles almost immediately after signing a contract with MGM in 1935 only corroborates the belief that Garland was practically born with the ability to succeed in show business and the motion picture industry.
Of course, Garland might be known today based more on her demise than anything else, and there’s no denying that one of the most fascinating (and tragic) aspects of her life story is the manner in which her downward spiral occurred with the same rapid progression as her meteoric ascent. Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47, but she had lost control over her life years earlier and was actually fortunate to live as long as she did.

First of all, you should know that this book contains two separate biographies: one of Shirley Temple and one of Judy Garland. There are mentions of each in the other, but there is very little analysis of any correspondence between the careers/lives of the two. In fact, they seem to have been written by two different people. This is not necessarily a flaw, but the title of the book suggested to me there would be some comparison.The biography of Shirley Temple was interesting and, except for a few stray typos, very quick and readable.
The biography of Judy Garland, however, was a bit less stellar (and this was probably because I know more about Judy Garland's movies than Shirley Temple's.) The author got significant plot points WRONG in describing both The Wizard of Oz and The Pirate, leading me to wonder if he or she had actually seen those movies.
Still, for a quick read, the book did give a glimpse of both actresses' careers (although the choice to put the introduction to Shirley's biography, the intro to Judy's biography and THEN start with the meat of Shirley's biography was a bit disconcerting.)

Shirley temple had a very gruelling life as a young child but didn't. Interfere with her life as it did just garland. Both stories were very interesting and I am pleased I have read them
The book just didn't grab me. I had hoped it would be more about the personal lives of Temple and Garland. I didn't find it readable.
The two books included are interesting and well written, but the style is more academic than normal biographies. They're also very short, readable in less than an hour. I'd regard these books as a very elementary introduction to the actors being written about; there was no depth to the work.
Received on my Android very quickly for an instant read.
Really good story, I enjoyed it greatly, Would like to read more by this author.
This "book" reads like a college thesis. It centers on the psychology behind the behavior of these two women, rather than telling the story of their lives. It was dry and very uninteresting reading. I cannot recommend it.
Here in one package is the biographies of the biggest child stars of Hollywood's golden age. Reading both biographies you come to realize that one would go on to have a happy and prosperous life while the other would end in tragedy.
I found the book interesting reading, especially since my mother told me I was named for Judy Garland! I particularly enjoyed comparing the dates of Judy Garland's best movies with the age my mother would have been when those were released, and how long that was before I was born!
